In May 2020, over 100,000 Americans had died of COVID-19. At that time, Mohammed and Ruth Nasrullah were inspired to create a virtual memorial to those lost to COVID-19. The site, COVID-19 Wall of Memories, was launched on January 4, 2021. It currently holds the faces and stories of over 22,000 COVID victims in the U.S.
In 2023, the Nasrullahs met with Houston-area residents who had lost family members to COVID-19. During that meeting, the idea for a physical memorial to Houston-area COVID-19 victims was born. With input from those Houston-area families, Mohammed and Ruth began to bring the physical memorial to life.
